Trust, Betrayal and Trauma at work and in life
The Road to Recovery
Few actions can derail or even kill a high potential career faster than betrayal.
Betrayal has consequences.
Betrayal can be in the workplace or in any of our other journeys. Even at the highest levels of leadership, CEO or Board Chair, betrayal can be experienced as intensely personal and shocking. In high profile roles, especially in the public and not-for-profit sectors, some betrayals are accompanied by intense interest by the media and other stakeholders. Betrayal can be devastatingly public and humiliating.
Betrayal takes time to process.
Such betrayals can take years to process … and where this work is not done, set in train trauma reactions. This can, in turn, lead to distrust of others – beyond the person or persons who betrayed you, and all too often a desire for retribution. The impacts of this sequence of events on organisational culture can be disastrous, especially where no reflection on what happened has occurred and no corrective action taken.
Recovery can be tough.
The likelihood of similar destructive behaviours happening all over again, just driven by a new set of faces remains high. Betrayal can and often does result in long term damage. We may struggle to get our career back on track, we may even have to change careers.
Finding your footing as you recover can be a challenging period, and you may question what the future holds.
